Mrs Mary Hemming AO, was a key member of the Melbourne group that developed the concept of therapeutic guidelines in the 1970s. She was appointed the founding Chief Executive Officer of Therapeutic Guidelines Limited (TGL) in 1996 and she remained in that position until her retirement in 2012. Under her leadership it was transformed from a government-funded venture into an independent not-for-profit organisation that is completely self funding, and flourishing. She succeeded in having Therapeutic Guidelines embedded in the Australian health system; she liaised with WHO to provide health workers in developing countries with free access to the Guidelines; she instituted an editorial training program to help build capacity among health professional from those countries. She was also actively involved in the development of Australia’s original National Medicines Policy.
