The Developing Countries Program has been working with the Tongan Drugs and Therapeutics Committee, offering assistance as they review and update the 2007 Tongan Standard Treatment Guidelines. Professor Rob Moulds and Erin Nunan travelled to Tonga in July 2017 to meet with the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee to discuss the ways in which TGL assistance could be offered to support guideline development in Tonga.
While in Tonga, Erin and Rob participated in the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee guideline workshop, attended by senior clinicians, public health, nursing and pharmacy staff. Challenges to guideline development were discussed by clinicians tasked with updating sections of the Standard Treatment Guidelines. Discussions were held around the aims and benefits of guideline production and the importance of selecting the guideline target audience at the outset.
Professor Rob Moulds presented on general guideline principles and showed the clinicians through eTG Complete online, highlighting that Therapeutic Guidelines’s aim is to provide point of care treatment guidance. As a result of this visit, Therapeutic Guidelines has offered complimentary subscriptions to eTG Complete to all Tongan Ministry of Health employees. The authors involved in updating the local guidelines are encouraged to use TG titles as a reference source while updating local guidelines. Rob met individually with the authors to discuss how Therapeutic Guidelines may be able to further assist with revising and updating topics for their new guidelines.
We wish the Tongan Ministry of Health the best of luck as they proceed with this important task and look forward to continuing to offer assistance to the process.
